Sale of Books from the Library |
|
The recent move of
the Library highlighted many duplicate items in the collection
that there is little merit in keeping, especially given the
limited storage space available. The intention is to sell these
items with the proceeds being used to purchase new acquisitions
as well as to repair and rebind books that are in some need of
attention.
It was agreed at an earlier Society business meeting that the
list of items for disposal must first be approved at a future
meeting. If content then items for disposal should:
-
(i) First be offered back to
donors, if they can be identified and it is practical to do so;
-
(ii) Society members are then to
have the opportunity to purchase items;
-
(iii) Finally, any remaining
items can be offered to the open market.
Full details of the procedures
for the bidding exercise and list of the items available can be
found here.
Note that the deadline for bids is 31st July 2008; Note
that bidding is open to ASCY members only. |

LIBRARY IS REHOUSED |
|
 |
|
About 35 members
gathered in St Sepulchre after the practice there on Tuesday 4th
March for an informal drinks evening to mark the official
opening of the new Library room there. The Master (Mark
Humphreys) thanked the Librarian for arranging the move from St
Paul's Cathedral and the donors of the new cabinets. Steve
Waters presented an album of photos of the restoration work
carried out at St Sepulchre in 1980-82, and members were able to
view a selection of the Society's Peal and Name Books in the new
room. More pictures here. |

ST MAGNUS APPEAL |
|
 |
The ASCY is
supporting the appeal for £250,000 to restore a new ring of bells to St Magnus the
Martyr, London Bridge. See the appeal website for more details and how you can help.
The new bells are to
be cast and hung in a new frame in the tower by the Whitechapel
Bell Foundry. We still have £15,000 left to raise.
The faculty application is currently with the Chancellor of the
Diocese and the current
timetable suggests the bells will be ringing by Easter 2009. |

FRIENDS OF THE BELL FUND |
At its meeting
on 9th January, the Society agreed to set up a Friends of the
Bell Fund scheme. Members will be invited to donate a minimum of
£40 per annum to the Society’s Bell Fund, which gives grants to
support the bell installations at churches where the Society has
a major interest, primarily those in and around the City of
London where the Society practises.
The Bell Fund has taken responsibility for all routine
non-faculty maintenance at St Giles, Cripplegate and St
Michael’s Cornhill. It has also committed £30,000 for the
forthcoming restoration at St Magnus, London Bridge.
Full details of the scheme are given in the next Society
Newsletter but, in the meantime, if any Member wishes to
contribute they are requested to contact the Treasurer, Phil
Rogers (193 Lennard Rd, Beckenham, Kent, BR3 1QN). |
